Last week, we discussed the difference between coaching and counseling. This week, we’ll address the differences between coaching and mentoring.
Women, in particular, find value in mentoring relationships. In fact, Scripture reminds us that as we grow older, we need to mentor younger women (Titus 2:3-4). Most of us can point to several wonderful mentors we’ve looked to for advice on how to bake the best pecan pie, how to iron those stiff cotton shirts and how to study the Word of God.
Then, as we age, we pass on our knowledge and experience to the younger women. We cheer them on as they pass the same knowledge on to the next generation. 
• Mentoring occurs when the mentor teaches the mentoree, usually from the mentor’s experiences.
• Mentoring is often a long-term, even a lifelong process.
• The mentoree often seeks to be like the mentor; i.e. the disciples of Jesus.
• The mentor is the experienced person while the mentoree is the student – more of a vertical position.
• Mentoring does not require a fee.
• A mentor does not need any type of license, certification or training – just experience.
While a coach may be an older person with more experience, age differences do not necessarily describe the coaching relationship.
• A coach may use some personal experiences, but also utilizes other resources.
• Coaching occurs until the client has moved past the roadblock and sees results.
• The coach and the client may have different strengths, abilities and passions, so the client will not necessarily seek to be like the coach.
• The coach and the client work in partnership – more of a parallel position.
• Coaching requires a fee.
• The effective coach is certified and trained as well as being a life-long learner.
