Do you find yourself struggling during the holidays? If so, you are not alone.

There are more calls that come to counseling offices from November to January due to the long list of demands over the holiday season.

Here are some suggestions that will help you have a more successful holiday season.

Identify Your Support People

You can keep a list of choice support people and their phone numbers in your car, on your mirror at home, or in your wallet.

Attend your chosen support group meetings in the weeks leading up to and after the holidays.

Check in

Do a “feelings checklist” everyday with your partner or friend.

  • I felt JOY today around ….
  •  I felt PASSION today around …
  • I felt ANGER today around …
  • I felt ENCOURAGEMENT today around …
  •  I felt GUILT today around …
  • I felt PAIN today around …
  • I felt FEAR today around …
  • I felt RELIEF today around …
  • I felt LONELINESS today around …
  • I felt GRATITUDE today around ..

You can do this feelings checklist whenever you feel overwhelmed.

Find Time For Fun

Try planning pleasant events in your life so you can have something to look forward to.

Be True to Yourself

Create a new tradition that fits your current circumstances.

  • If you lost a loved one this year, honor them with an ornament, bake their favorite cookie, read their favorite book, or another creative option.
  • Attend a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day service at your local church
  • Give back. Volunteer at your favorite non-profit or charity.
